Binsteed First School. Architect, Alfred H. Bone, 1880. Situated between three roads bounded by Winchester Road to the north, Langley Road to the east and Binsteed Road to the south. The building is L-shaped in plan, built throughout in red brick with blue brick, stone and terracotta detailing, with a red tile roof. The two storey Winchester Road elevation has a central six window section flanked by tall Gothic gabled sections. These gables contain four lancet windows surmounted by three roundels, the upper portion of the gable face being tile-hung. The right hand gabled section incorporates a Gothic doorway headed 'Boys'. The return building to Langley Road commences with a three storey abruptly terminating tower with belfry at the top and Gothic doorway at ground floor level, this is the 'Girls' entrance. The 'Infants' entrance is next to the girls in a gabled single storey section, which contains an Early English Gothic window. The final section which returns on to Binsteed Road although of two storeys height is only a single storey surmounted by four gables. | SU 653 016 2705 18 |
