Fort Widley. Built 1862 as part of Palmerston's Portsmouth defences. Massive polygonal enclosure with long rectangular keep in centre of the inward side of enciente containing major part of barrack accommodation. Isolated from rest of enclosure by dry moats. Norman style entrance archway with scalloped capitals. Ramparts have gun emplacements. Massive outer earthworks. Partly built into hillside to the north.
