The first Hilsea Lines were built in 1747. They comprised a rampart and moat stretching from Portsmouth Harbour to Langstone Harbour. In 1858 the Lines were re-formed on a more massive scale. Parts were demolished in the 1920s and 1930s. The remaining parts of the lines are now Scheduled Ancient Monuments. The grid reference given locates the centre fo the lines within this ward.
