Excavations in 1972 in advance of motorway construction revealed, after topsoil removal, a new exposure of a Pleistocene raised beach in which were discovered over fifty pit-like features some of which contained Mesolithic and Neolithic flint material. During motorway construction in 1972, rescue excavation of an Iron Age site revealed linear ditches, two hut circles, pits, including a ritual pit, and post and stake holes. Finds include Iron Age pottery, a bone comb, Bronze and Iron Age metalwork, loom weights, a quern stone, animal bones and Mesolithic flints. SMR SU50NE26. Ref Rescue Archaeology in Hants. Clapper Hill Chalk Pit, Spurlings Lane, Downbarn Farm. Excavations and finds of skeletons in 1926 suggested a Bronze Age barrow with a super-imposed cemetery. Recent excavations have only produced C.11 - C.13 pottery, animal bones, and shells, suggesting later Norman occupation. Trial trenching of an adjacent area prior to ploughing produced no further evidence of the cemetery which was possibly destroyed by quarrying. SMR SU50NE4. | SU 590 074 0702 116 |

A settlement site was excavated prior to motorway construction. Evidence of buildings such as traces of flint footings, tiles and iron nails was found.
