Page 1 - Fareham
Archaeological evidence suggests that Fareham has been occupied since
Roman times. By the 12th century Fareham consisted of a small rural
settlement around the church, the churchyard being used for the market.
Later the market was moved to the southern end of the High Street; this
location can still be identified by the island block of buildings which
closes the High Street. The town became a prosperous marketing centre and
port, and during the 18th century many naval officers moved here, building
the many fine Georgian houses. Particularly pleasing is the series of
buildings which follows the curve of the High Street.
