Three miles north of Romsey, the parish of Michelmersh lies on and immediately east of the River Test. The name means "large marsh", and the village of Michelmersh is centrally situated in the parish, with the smaller village of Timsbury to the south.
The manor was first recorded in a Saxon charter of 985, and was a possession of Mottisfont Priory. The parish church of St. Mary has many C.12 features, and Manor Farm close by dates from the C. 13. The parish is criss-crossed by numerous footpaths and brooks feeding the main river.
